Epiphany is about acknowledging and celebrating God’s revelation of himself to the world in Jesus Christ. The season of Epiphany is the bridge between Advent and Lent. The Day of Epiphany marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas and is associated with the Visit of the Magi, giving witness to the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy about the nations (the Gentiles) being drawn to the Light of God shining through the birth of the Messiah. Two special Sundays serve as bookends for this celebration of God’s revelation: The Baptism of the Lord on January 8th and the Transfiguration of the Lord on February 19th. This year the Gospel readings for the season of Epiphany are drawn from Matthew and we will be using these texts as the basis for our sermon series. These passages guide us into an awareness of the identity, the ministry and the teaching of Jesus and so provide us with a picture of some of what it means to choose to follow him.
