Enough:
Seven Sermons on the Life and Ministry of the Prophet Elijah
Super Hero films seem to be all the rage these days, and as one reads the story of the Old Testament Prophet, Elijah it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to adapt his story to a screenplay in this genre. Elijah’s story has all the elements one would expect in a super hero’s tale: a divine calling, a courageous quest, a fight against an evil foe, the threat of death, violent overthrow of enemies, and a special garment with imbued with mythic significance. It’s all there and just waiting to be deployed in a summer sermon series. But there is more to Elijah’s story than the elements that make for a summer block buster. Elijah’s story is ultimately a story about learning to trust in the sufficiency of God. It depicts the life of one who was constantly learning that God is enough. We live in a world that loves invite us to fear over the threats of scarcity and unsustainability. Elijah dwelt in such a world and met each of those threats with the choice to trust in the sufficiency of God. As we travel with him through drought and despair, danger and the threat of death, we have the opportunity to learn a bit about what it means to live in the certainty that God is enough.
