Easter is our highest holy day. It is our great celebration of new life in Christ and thus the foundation of our hope. But the resurrection is not just something that happened to Jesus 2000 years ago and not just something that we wait for. The resurrection has implications for the life we are living right now. As St. Paul admonishes us at the end of his thoughtful celebration of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15, we must be “steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord because we know that in the Lord our labor is not in vain.” In essence, he calls us to practice resurrection; to move toward the things that characterize new life in Jesus Christ. To that end we will spend the next seventeen weeks looking at the ways Jesus teaches about this new life both in his parables and in the Sermon on the Mount.
