Rejoice! Press on! Don’t be anxious! Words like these fill the pages of Paul’s letter to his dear friends in Philippi. These words of encouragement are made all the more powerful when we remember that Paul wrote them from a sustained imprisonment in jail. From a place of suffering, a place of confinement, a place ripe with cause for anxiety, Paul writes not words of sorrow but words of encouragement and joy, flowing from his confidence in the good news of Jesus Christ. Paul’s words speak first to the struggle, suffering and anxieties of the Philippians but extend to us as well, reminding us that the circumstances of today are not the first word nor are they the final word. Over the next several weeks, we will be looking at Philippians as a source of encouragement as we continue to seek Christ in the midst of our own confinement.
