In today’s America any discussion that dares to blend the subjects of religion and politics is something most of us want to avoid. The hardening of the political lines that separate us and the growing distance between the political poles that attract us work together to foster the sense that it is best to just keep quiet on these matters. But this difficulty and our corresponding reticence to engage it are not something new to this age. The Old Testament prophets were often chastised for sticking their noses into the business of the state and sometimes persecuted for doing so. In the face of this conflict they prayed to God, and in their prayers, we learn some things about what it means engage the conflict that grows out of being citizens of two kingdoms. In this sermon series we will explore the prayers of five prophets who had to navigate this tension and thus have something to teach us about how we might find peace in the midst of the seemingly insoluble tension caused by our current political rancor.
