In her book, The Essence of Prayer, Ruth Burrows describes prayer as the act of stepping across a threshold where we enter God’s presence and then “hold ourselves there.” Prayer is essentially relationship with God. It is the act of noticing and responding to God’s presence. And there is nowhere we can be that is not also in the presence of God. Thus, prayer is not something we do only in holy or private places, nor does it require us to bow our heads or kneel. Prayer happens as we recognize and respond to the presence of God in the everyday activities, relationships, and endeavors of life. As we learn to discern, step into, and remain in the light of God’s presence wherever we are, we learn to pray. In this series of sermons, six Psalms and some stories about the life and ministry of Jesus, will be our guides to the work of stepping into God’s light and holding ourselves there in order to pray.
